We enjoy witnessing Tracee Ellis Ross’ sartorial choices as much as we enjoy watching her play Rainbow Johnson on Black-ish. While we know she’s perfectly capable of styling herself, we appreciate the drama stylist Karla Welch, makeup artist Lisa Storey, and hairstylist Johnnie Sapong created for Ross’ attendance at the 2018 Emmy Awards.

Like Taraji P. Henson, Ross and her glam squad chose to let her Maison Valentino Haute Couture “Femme Terrible” gown take center stage. The Pierpaolo Piccioli-designed moment features fuchsia taffetas plissé ending in a train.

With a voluminous gown, it’s best to keep hair simple. “The idea was to be able to take the high couture nature of the gown to create something very chic with the hair but that still feels effortless,” explained Sapong in press materials.

Fortunately, Sapong shared the steps he took to create Ross’ high bun for the Emmys using Suave Professionals products.

  1. Start by prepping the hair using the Suave ProfessionalsAlmond + Shea Butter Moisturizing Conditioner as a leave-in conditioner to get the hair feeling moisturized.
  2. I added a bit of the Suave Professionals Captivating Curls Mousse Cream and proceeded to dry hair with a diffuser to be able to create voluminous curls.
  3. Using another bit of the conditioner, I pulled the hair into a high pony, but as I pulled it back, I made sure to create an element of texture by sleeking it using the fingers.
  4. Once in a high pony, I used a micro-curling iron on the ponytail by taking sections out, because I was trying to work with the natural texture. This step was only to accentuate that natural definition, while still aiming for that fresh off the shower look.
  5. I proceeded to twist the hair into a high bun on the crown creating a combination of natural textures.
  6. I finished the look by spraying a little bit of Suave Professionals Natural Hold Micro Mist Hairspray to tame the flyaways and ensure the look will last all night!

This is the perfect style for going from office to happy hour to dinner to walking the dog the next morning. Will you get the look?
