Today, Hennessy released in the United States its third selection in the Master Blender’s Selection Series, a single batch cognac that is the first creation of Renaud Fillioux de Gironde, the eighth Master Blender and successor to his uncle, Master Blender Yann Fillioux. Master Blender’s Selection No. 3(750 ml, $110) reportedly captures “Fillioux de Gironde’s creativity, imagination, and predilection for certain eaux-de-vie,” a clear, colorless fruit brandy.
Unlike most Hennessy blends, Master Blender’s Selection No.3 is a genuine single batch cognac, never to be reproduced again. The eaux-de-vie assembled in this offering are not used in any other Hennessy Cognac. Each eaux-de-vie is aged for at least seven years in young oak barrels before being aged further in old barrels. As a result, the blend has a light amber hue and a golden sheen with a sweet distinctive flavor that is reminiscent of toasted hazelnuts and well-made pralines. It evokes the aroma of soft-textured French pastries.
Each limited-edition bottle is numbered and signed by Fillioux de Gironde, who became the Master Blender after his uncle stepped down in July 2017. The Fillioux family has been creating cognac for Hennessy for eight generations. Fillioux de Gironde samples and selects the best eaux-de-vie through daily tastings, as the leader of the prestigious Tasting Committee.
Master Blender’s Selection No. 3 can be enjoyed neat, over ice, or in a mixed cocktail. It is available at fine retailers nationwide.
