NeNe Leakes took to her Instagram stories on Oct. 10 to reveal that her son Brentt had a stroke and heart failure two weeks ago, and, as a result, the 23-year-old is "struggling with speaking."
She said in the video that she had hoped to share the news once Brentt was further along in his recovery.
“This is not the way I wanted it to come out,” she said in the video post that has since expired. “We wanted to be able to talk about it ourselves when Brentt was in a better place. So, here I am. I would rather the correct thing be out there than something that’s not correct.”
The Real Housewives of Atlanta OG said Brentt's care team is still trying to determine what caused the life-threatening condition. She said that when someone as young as him suffers a stroke and heart failure, doctors sometimes trace the cause to drugs, alcohol, or an infection related to HIV, reports CNN.
"Brent doesn’t drink or do drugs," NeNe said. "And obviously they’ve tested him for all of those things. They also tested him for HIV."
Another theory, NeNe said doctors offered, is that Brentt was unaware he had contracted COVID-19, which can affect the heart. She also said doctors have ruled out his weight as a contributing factor and have theorized that Brentt may have been born with an undiagnosed congenital heart issue.
NeNe also said that Brentt was experiencing a lot of stress in September around the time of the first anniversary of his father Gregg Leakes's passing from colon cancer.
"He was very close to his dad and he’s been super stressed out over it. And I don’t even know if that has anything to do with it at all."
His physicians are running additional tests to find the root cause of the "very scary" situation.
"I don’t even want to go into details of what happened and how I found out and what condition he was in," The New Normal actress said in the video. "Obviously a stroke is a very serious thing, and he’s struggling with speaking."
It seems NeNe is making preparations in case Brentt doesn't make a full recovery. She concluded her lengthy update video by sharing that she has stepped away from The Linnethia Lounge, the family's business in Duluth, GA that Brentt helps her manage. She also said they've discussed selling the business and it's "very possible."
"Brentt ran the lounge, that was his pride and joy. He loved it."
NeNe continued, "We have sat and talked about selling the lounge now because it’s something that Brentt runs along with me. I got into business with Brentt and Gregg and some other friends to do it. And this is just a lot right now on me."
While asking her followers to pray for Brentt, NeNe said there is cause for hope.
"He has shown some improvement," NeNe said. "We’re really happy and blessed for that."
