Netflix has announced that the release date for its limited series Self-Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker, starring Octavia Spencer, will be March 20, 2020.
Self-Made is the first time the trailblazing Black hair care entrepreneur’s story will be told through a drama series, even though she was America’s first female self-made millionaire. The program was inspired by On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam C. J. Walker, which was written by Walker’s great-great-granddaughter A’Lelia Bundles. According to the official Netflix description: “Against all odds, Walker overcame post-slavery racial and gender biases, personal betrayals, and business rivalries to build a ground-breaking brand that revolutionized Black haircare [sic], as she simultaneously fought for social change.”
Along with Spencer, some more heavy-hitters in the entertainment industry star in Self-Made: Blair Underwood as her husband C.J. Walker, Tiffany Haddish as her daughter Lelia, Garrett Morris as her father-in-law, Carmen Ejogo as her business rival Addie Munroe, Kevin Carroll as her longtime lawyer Freeman Ransom, and Bill Bellamy as Ransom’s cousin Sweetness.
Kasi Lemmons, co-writer and director of Harriet, directed the series, along with DeMane Davis. Elle Johnson and Janine Sherman Barrois are showrunners for the series produced by LeBron James’s SpringHill Entertainment and Wonder Street in association with Warner Bros. Television. Nicole Jefferson Asher is the writer and co-executive producer. The executive producers are Barrois, Johnson, James, Spencer, Lemmons, Maverick Carter, Mark Holder, Christine Holder, and Jamal Henderson.
