The Roots Picnic 2020 has partnered with Michelle Obama’s When We All Vote, a nonpartisan nonprofit organization, to encourage viewers to register to vote during the 13th annual music festival that will be a virtual experience exclusively on The Roots’ YouTube channel on Saturday, June 27th, at 8 p.m. ET. Obama will co-host the picnic with the legendary Roots Crew’s Black Thought and Questlove.
This year, there’s a call to action beyond viewing and enjoying some of the music world’s best performers. Fans and viewers are encouraged to register to vote here, by texting ROOTS to 56005, or by clicking the link in the live chat section of YouTube throughout the picnic. Before the event, however, folks can RSVP for The Roots Picnic and volunteer to text voting-age fans through Outvote, “a web and mobile organizing platform used to reach unregistered voters,” according to a press release. The goal is to reach and engage 500,000 eligible voters, so tell a friend and tell them to tell a friend.
THE BRIDGE has executive produced and curated a pre-show that will broadcast at 5:45 p.m. on The Roots’ YouTube before the main concert. Several heavy-hitting newcomers to the music sphere are expected to perform and provide special content. Bam Marley, Brianna Cash, Daniel Sebastian, Iman Omari, Infinity Song, IV Jay, Jac Ross, Jayla Darden, JD & Domi, Justine Skye, LOONY, Nissi, Raye, Riela, RMR, T.Nava, Sampa the Great, Savanna Christina, Shawn Smith, YelloPain, Victory Boyd, Infinity Song, AquilDawud, and SUSU have all confirmed their involvement in the pre-show.
The main event will, of course, include a performance by The Roots, but fans should also anticipate H.E.R., Lil Baby, Roddy Ricch, SZA, Kirk Franklin, Snoh Aalegra, Earthgang, G Herbo, Polo G, D-Nice, and Musiq Soulchild (backed by The Roots) performing. As co-host, Obama will also make an appearance, as well as Lin Manuel Miranda, Chris Paul, Common, Liza Koshy, Kerry Washington, Tracee Ellis Ross, Janelle Monáe, and Elaine Welteroth.
Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and Tarik "Black Thought" Trotter (Two One Five Entertainment) executive produced The Roots Picnic 2020, along with Shawn Gee (Live Nation Urban) and Dan Parise (DPS).
PayPal is powering The Roots Picnic Marketplace, a curation of Black-owned businesses across the United States, so viewers can shop, donate, and meet the business owners during the music festival. PayPal has committed to support Black-owned enterprises and fight economic inequality, because it recognizes the integral part these businesses play in our economy, according to media materials. Cîroc, Glossier, and Lowes are also sponsoring The Roots Picnic.
