The Black Boaters Summit Returns: A Juneteenth Celebration of Culture, Community & Open Water

This summer, the waves are calling—and the Black Boaters Summit is answering with a powerful, multi-city celebration that blends culture, heritage, and community on the water. Powered by Discover Boating (an initiative of the MRAA and NMMA), the 2025 Black Boaters Summit is expanding to new shores, setting sail in Detroit; Washington, D.C.; and Long Island, NY, beginning June 14, with a mission to make space, make memories, and make history.

Now in its third year, the Black Boaters Summit is redefining the face of boating. More than just a series of events, it’s a growing movement centered on inclusion, joy, and cultural pride—anchored by local experiences, regional pride, and national momentum.

Detroit: Motor City, Meet Marina Life

The Detroit stop brings the Summit to Riverside Marina, a historic Black-owned marina that has long been a cornerstone of the city’s boating scene. Set against the Detroit River with Canada on the horizon, the event taps into the city’s deep well of Black excellence and grit. Expect Detroit-style flair—from soul food on the docks to Motown beats in the breeze. Local chefs and artists will join the “BoatAppétit” culinary showcase, and boating novices and pros, alike, will enjoy water demos and dockside education sessions.

Washington, D.C.: Power, Purpose & Potomac Vibes

In the nation’s capital, the Summit will dock at James Creek Marina, a sleek spot near the Wharf and National Harbor. Here, history meets the future as the event coincides with the city’s Juneteenth observances. Attendees can expect cultural tributes, panels on water safety and ownership, and appearances by local change-makers who are pushing for equity not just on land—but on water too. The D.C. event will spotlight the growing presence of Black families in sailing, sport boating, and maritime entrepreneurship.

Long Island, NY: Legacy & Luxury

Returning to Breezy Point Yacht Club, the Long Island edition brings a laid-back, family-friendly atmosphere to the East Coast’s boating scene. With scenic views; curated music vibes; and regional food trucks, this stop is perfect for both seasoned captains and first-time cruisers. Last year’s Long Island event drew hundreds—this year, expect even more as Black boating culture continues to flourish in the Tri-State area. Look for curated networking moments, family-friendly activities, and a celebration of East Coast legacy and luxury.

“The Black Boaters Summit is a celebration of freedom—both on the calendar and in spirit,” said Kevin Williams, NMMA’s vice president of North American marketing. “By meeting our communities where they are—on rivers, lakes, and marinas—we create unforgettable experiences that make boating more inclusive and joyful for all.”

From “BoatAppétit” tastings to curated panel discussions, family fun zones to wave-making music, each city offers its own flavor—but together, they form a united call to action: Black joy belongs on the water.
