It’s interesting how the temperature reaches nearly unbearable heights as the summer comes to a close. You’d think that as the season winds down, the temperatures would dwindle as a result, but we all know that’s not the case. August will be its usual sultry self, leading to scalp sweat and stink, sticky armpits, and sensitive skin. Now, that we’ve diagnosed the inevitable problems, let’s “cure” them with the help of top-notch offerings from two of our favorite drugstore brands — Dove and Vaseline. These three products will prove you don’t have to break the bank (or become a hermit devoted to her air conditioner) to make the dog days of summer bearable.
Let’s start from the top, the scalp. There’s no way to prevent your scalp from sweating whether the temperature is high or low, but you can prevent dandruff and odor from building up with Dove Invigorating Mint Anti-Dandruff Shampoo ($4.99), which employs active Pyrithione Zinc to combat the itch and irritation that comes along with a dandruff-prone scalp. While most dandruff shampoos contain Pyrithione Zinc, this Dove hair cleanser is mild and PH-balanced, so it won’t strip the moisture out of your tresses while cleaning the scalp of dandruff flakes and buildup. In addition, the minty sensation will leave your scalp feeling refreshed and cool. This shampoo formula is gentle enough to use daily, but has also been effective in fighting dandruff on a weekly or semi-weekly basis.
On a personal note, dandruff is the bane of loc wearers, but the Dove Invigorating Mint Anti-Dandruff Shampoo leaves no flake behind, which helps to prevent the buildup of flakes and gunk at the point where new growth meets the loc.
Now, on to the armpits. We have six words that will change how you dress in the morning: Dove Invisible Dry Spray Antiperspirant Deodorant ($5.49). As we’ve mentioned previously, this deodorant doesn’t leave ANY white marks and is invisible on 100 different colors. It also effectively provides sweat protection without the drying effects of alcohol (or ethanol). It even contains one-quarter moisturizers to soften and reduce the irritation or chafing caused by shaving. But it’s the scent of the Clear Finish version that really sold this writer. If Dove decided to bottle this fragrance with notes of rose and white flowers, she’d be the first in line to purchase.
We all wear less clothing when it is hot, but that leaves the body exposed to the sun, which can dehydrate and inflame the skin. Vaseline Intensive Care Cocoa Radiant Lotion ($5.89) puts the moisture back into the skin and helps to soothe minor inflammation with the help of 100 percent pure cocoa butter and micro-droplets of Vaseline Jelly. Most of us learned the benefits of Vaseline Jelly, which contains 100 percent pure, triple-refined petroleum jelly, from an early age, but it’s too heavy to apply directly to the body during the summer. Fortunately, this lotion delivers moisturizing cocoa butter and Vaseline in an easily-spreadable, non-heavy way. Just don’t forget to top off with sunscreen.
These three products, which are available at most drugstores and mass retailers, will definitely make the dog days of summer bearable because you’ve got rooftop parties, barbecues, and more to attend.
