Tyler Perry and Oprah are expanding their partnership to launch Tyler Perry’s new, self-titled talk show.
On his social networks, he posted a picture from the set of Tyler: The Tyler Perry Show, which will premiere on the OWN channel. “Look what I’m working on,” posted Perry from the set. Perry is keeping other details about the show under wraps but revealed in the caption that the show will be “coming on next Tuesday after The Haves And The Have Nots, only on OWN.”
Perry, who got his start on the stage-play circuit has expanded into bringing his characters to life in theaters but seems to be entering the next phase in his career through television. His first two television shows House of Payne and Meet the Browns were ratings bests for TBS in African-American demographics. Episodes of both shows are in syndication.
In 2012, Perry and Oprah inked a deal to bring several scripted series to the network, namely The Haves and The Have Nots, currently bringing in about 2 million viewers on Tuesday nights. His shows Love Thy Neighbor, and Tyler Perry’s For Better or Worse occupy other slots on the channel. He is also planning a television show spin off for his next movie A Single Moms Club set to hit theaters March 14.
Perry previously tried his turn as a late-night talk show host with one-off specials in which he featured the cast from his movies Why Did I Get Married? and I Can Do Bad All By Myself. This new television show could serve as a way to promote his other ventures and introduce future projects.
OWN has expanded its content offerings to include motivational speaker Iyanla Vanzant: Fix My Life, and a host of African-American centered reality shows. If successful, this could be another ratings hit for the network and Perry.
