In 2011, Lisa Simone Kelly, Simone’s daughter, filed a $155 million suit against her own father for illegally obtaining and giving away priceless possessions belonging to the singer, including master recordings, photos, and diaries. And in 2012, Kelly voiced her opinion on the forthcoming Nina Simone biopic starring Zoe Saldana.
“Please correct me, but isn’t a biopic the story of one’s life?” she wrote to Facebook fans, hinting that many of the plot points of the film were embellished or completely fabricated.
Now, the estate is once again making noise, by suing Taiwanese tech brand HTC for $1 million for unauthorized use of Simone’s “Sinnerman” in its “You” advertising campaign. While HTC have yet to release a statement, we’re sure the smartphone and tablet makers are not “feeling good” about it.
