In terms of summer blockbusters, forget about Superman and White House Down. It’s all about the Twinkies. The much-adored, cream filled sponge cakes return to grocery store shelves as of July 15.
The golden cakes – created by a baker who needed a suitable replacement for strawberry shortcake’s off-season – have been overloading tastebuds with delight since 1930. Parent company Hostess filed for bankruptcy in mid-2012 and officially stopped production of the treats last November. The Twinkies shortage led to the types of supply-demand activities one might expect – as in eBay auctions of $5,000 for a single cake and $200,000 for an entire box.
Even sweeter news for sugar fiends, Hostess Brands is planning to bring back its entire line of snacks.
