Kmart has been getting lots of laughs for recent commercials where imperfect enunciation led to laughs about the way “Big Gas Prices†and “Ship My Pants†sound rolling off the tongue. The series was created by DraftFCB.
The retailer came under fire this week for a new spot that customers believed to be the latest in their official series – called “ Kmart Knickers â€.
Kmart denied any affiliation with the commercial, indicating via Twitter that they don’t endorse that type of content. Because knickers are no laughing matter.
Though it was clearly a parody (a California comedy troupe called The Gunfordmay was behind this particular version), that old debate about what’s allowable and what’s off-limits when it comes to comedy at the intersection of race is up for discussion again. (Had this been a Dave Chappelle skit, it wouldn’t have ruffled nary a feather. But it wasn’t, so…..)
