Simi Valley, California teacher, Malia Brooks is currently on trial for admitting to engaging in sexual intercourse with one of her sixth grade students this past year. Apparently, the 32 year old Garden Grove teacher is being charged with three counts of lewd activity with a minor under the age of 14, and could face up to six years in prison, as she should. Her lawyer, however, thinks the contrary, and has made some brow raising comments to defend his claims.
“Malia Brooks has a mental illness. For 31 years, she was a law-abiding citizen,” her attorney, Ron Bamieh, said. “Something had to occur for her to drastically change who she was. It’s not like she is attracted to 12 year-old boys.”
According to CNN.com, the former teacher engaged in a four month long sexual affair starting last February with the child, and ultimately claims that the only reason she agreed to the guilty plea this past Thursday, was to avoid having the child approach the stand during the trial.
Now, I know there are plausible defenses for crimes committed by those who are considered mentally ill–seeing that it is virtually impossible to substantially determine if someone is in their right mind when committing an offense. However, this sounds very convenient for Ms. Brooks and her defense team; that she is suddenly mentally ill and was incapable of making a rational decision to NOT have sex with her very underaged student (insert side eye here). But, that’s just my unsolicited opinion.
Do you think she was mentally ill throughout the course of her affair?
