With gun violence–particularly in the black community–saturating news headlines, the finger of blame has turned toward hip-hop culture, yet again. Rapper and mogul Curtis “50 Cent†Jackson will appear on CBS News “Sunday Morning†to field a few questions on the topic, in addition to his upcoming 5th album Street King Immortal.
When asked by CBS’s Tracy Smith about a link between the two worlds, 50 Cent coolly argued there is no connection between rap music and gun violence. He explained, his music reflects his personal experience rather than placing gunplay on a pedestal.
“If you were doing that and you weren’t actually experiencing it, I would say you were glorifying it,” he said. “If you’re drawing from something from your actual experience, isn’t it art imitating life?”
Art imitating life, indeed, but at whose expense?
