Former South African President Nelson Mandela is back to his smiling self, evident in this recent photo exclusively obtained by The Grio.
The 94-year-old global leader spent nearly three months in the hospital back in December due to a lung infection and gallstone surgery, but was released shortly before the new year. Mandela’s granddaughters, who are currently in New York promoting their reality show Being Mandela, said he’s doing great and has loved ones by his side.
“His health is very good. He’s surrounded by family,” Zaziwe Dlamini-Manaway said. “We go to the house all the time. He’s really happiest the most when he spends time with his great grandchildren. So before we came on the trip with literally went to go see him to say bye. So he’s in really really good spirits. We’re very happy.”
The photo taken Saturday (Feb. 2) shows Mandela holding Zaziwe’s youngest son Zen Manaway, the youngest member of the family. Mandela is the oldest.
Being Mandela will follow Zaziwe and her sister Swati Dlamini as they keep the family together, as well as highlight conflicts and personal aspirations.
