Cake trends tickle your fancy with an old-fashioned flair.
When it comes to wedding cakes, trends come and go. A few years ago, modern cakes made their mark. Soon after, retro designs became the rave. Today, if it looks like something your grandmother could’ve had at her wedding, it’s sure to be in style. Carrying over from 2012, vintage-inspired wedding cakes will continue to be a big trend in 2013.
When coming up with your design concept, peruse through pages of magazines—but not just bridal titles. Consider fashion, photography, and even craft magazines. Inspiration can also come from your wedding dress, china patterns, or even a single strand of pearls.
Here, we asked African American baker extraordinaire Gail Johnson, of A Piece of Cake in Chicago, to design a cake that would compliment a bride’s antique cake stand. The result was an elegant buttercream creation, filled with dark chocolate ganache, covered in antique white fondant, and adorned with large sugar roses, for an ultra-feminine touch.
