Nominations for the 85th annual Academy Awards were announced bright and early at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills on Thursday and, as expected, Denzel Washington is in the running.
The 58-year-old actor received an Oscar nod for Best Actor in a Leading Role in the Robert Zemeckis-directed drama Flight. To date, Washington has captured several nominations for the troubled character that include a Golden Globe, NAACP Image Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award, among others.
Washington will face Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook), Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln), Hugh Jackman (Les Misérables) and Joaquin Phoenix (The Master) in the top category.
Beasts of the Southern Wild star Quvenzhané Wallis, 9, made history this morning by becoming the youngest individual to score an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role. The Louisiana-born cutie has received non-stop praise for her character Hushpuppy in the critically acclaimed film.
Wallis’ competition includes Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty), Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook), Emmanuelle Riva (Amour) and Naomi Watts (The Impossible).
Quentin Tarantino‘s Django Unchained walked away with five nominations that include Christoph Waltz for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Picture, Cinematograph, Sound Editing and Original Screenplay.
