We all wish the best for our besties, and it’s great to hear good news from the folks we care about. Likewise, if something’s going wrong in your friend’s life, you definitely want to know where to send flowers or whose butt to kick. But if you only get one set of news or the other, you might be being used.
Whether someone is dumping to brag or dumping because they’re sad, if it’s unbalanced, it’s uncool. In either extreme, they’re treating you more like an audience member than a platonic partner and that just doesn’t work. Oversharing good news can make someone feel better if those around them aren’t rising to the same heights, and always being a Debbie or Donald Downer can get someone tons of attention … that they don’t have to give back.
