Poetic Justice (1993)
“What you want? You want to smell my poonani?” — Justice
Just last week, the Internet was buzzing about Beyoncé rocking some long synthetic braids. Media outlets kept referring to Bey’s hairstyle as “Poetic Justice braids.” If you have never seen or heard of this movie, then of course you were lost in translation, but here is a fill-in. Poetic Justice has and will forever be considered a classic movie. To begin with, Janet Jackson and Tupac Shakur take the leads, playing the roles of Justice and Lucky. Justice is known to keep her hair in these long extension box braids while dressed in all black because she mourning the loss of her boyfriend to L.A. violence. Lucky, in vain, takes an interest in Justice. By chance, they end up on a road trip together that starts as a disaster, turns into a romance and then back into a disaster. Janet and Tupac both made their mark as actors with this flick. Almost 20 years later, people are still making references to Poetic Justice. That’s how you know it’s a classic.
