In June, Aretha Franklin expressed her interest in being a judge on a popular reality TV talent show like American Idol or The X Factor, along with legendary singers such as Gladys Knight and Patti LaBelle.
“I would love to be a judge on one of those shows. But I don’t understand why singers like myself, Gladys, Natalie (Cole) and Patti can’t be judges,” she said in an interview. “We never get a call. I don’t understand.”
Luckily for Knight, that call has come in.
On Wednesday, BET’s sister network Centric announced that the eight-time Grammy Award winner will take the role as “lead judge” on Apollo Live, a new singing competition at New York’s legendary Apollo Theater. The new series, premiering in the fall, will put a new spin on the popular “Amateur Night.”
Doug E. Fresh and New Edition’s Michael Bivins will also join Knight at the judging table.
Apollo Live is executive produced by Jamie Foxx and will be hosted by comedian/actor Tony Rock.
