What we tell ourselves: â€œIâ€™m sure heâ€™s just kidding.â€ Usually said after Mr. So-and-so embarrasses us in public, makes a bad joke at our expense or gets caught saying something off color to his boys about us.
Why we say it: Â Our feelings are hurt, but we donâ€™t want to appear too â€œsensitive.â€
Why this is a problem: Words matter. And if someoneâ€™s words are hurting you, thatâ€™s a problem. Plus, itâ€™s pretty disrespectful to talk badly about someone, especially someone you know intimately.
If a guy regularly says things that hurt youâ€”even if heâ€™s trying to be funnyâ€”it may be time to reconsider the relationship instead of trying to re-jigger your feelings.
