Controlling a yacht is much harder than steering a powerboat. Observing our captain, Jelly Belly, maneuver around the sea, I quickly learned piloting a boat of that magnitude is deceptively simple looking. Is the engine in forward? How is the wind and current? Where are the channel markers? All of these considerations came rushing to me as I played pseudo-captain. After all, I wanted to have fun, but I also didn’t want to capsize! Determined to maximize my boating experience (and being the competitive girl I am), I spent the remainder of the trip vying to take the helm once more.
Unfortunately, no one trusted me with the wheel again, but there were still countless good times to be had. The most memorable started with me planted in the fighting chair (the main seat when fishing) of a Bertram Sportfisherman in Virgin Gorda. Like Seabiscuit, I was off to the races.
