NYC start your engines. Yesterday, Formula One World Champion Sebastian Vettel made car racing history by test driving on the new Grand Prix of America circuit at Port Imperial course in Weehawken, NJ. In hot anticipation of next year’s race (set to take place in June 2013), Vettel was accompanied by former Grand Prix winner David Coulthard to showcase his two-time defending champion skills along the 3.2 mile route in Infiniti’s 385 horsepower IPL G Coupe. Testing the circuit for the first time, the two gave a number of passages the ride of their lives, cruising along the beautiful Manhattan skyline.
“Sebastian got a very small taste of what racing around the Port Imperial course will be like, but there’s no substitute when he’ll be driving at just over 200 miles per hour,” says promoter Leo Hindery. “We can’t wait to host him and the world’s other elite drivers with the world’s greatest city in the background.”
Accessible by the PATH, NJ Transit and NY Waterway and Bus Network, the track is only a hop-skip and jump from the city, and is expected to draw upwards of 100,000 people, most getting there by public transportation. The three-day event will include a practice on Friday, qualifying on Saturday and race on Sunday, and will be next summer’s Fast and Furious event du jour.
