There can be no doubt that Trayvon’s murder was a hate crime. George Zimmerman (pictured left), the shooter said to the 911 dispatcher that Trayvon looked “suspicious” and looked as though he was “up to no good.” In Zimmerman’s mind, “Black” is synonymous with “suspicious” and “up to no good.” He also says “f***** coon’s.” Zimmerman was clearly framing a scenario for the police in order to criminalize Trayvon, and perhaps, he was making a case in advance to justify the application of Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” defense–a law that is constitutionally questionable.
Also, questionable is the behavior of Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee, Jr. Zimmerman was not even arrested. And Trayvon’s remains were tested for drugs and alcohol, while Zimmerman was tested for neither. Lee even tried to evoke sympathy by suggesting he, too, is discriminated against as a white man in uniform.
