The days of grooving to the sounds of R&B and soul by way of television network VH1 Soul may be numbered. Media king Ryan Seacrest is looking for a new business venture and his eyes are set on the cable channel.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Seacrest is in talks to take over MTV Networks’ VH1 Soul to launch a new network described as a “music, pop-culture and lifestyle-oriented channel.” The network deal is in conjunction with AEG and would pull additional programming from the their worldwide concerts and live venue assets. THR reports that these programs would not be in competition with NBCUniversal‘s cable network E!, where Seacrest has a long-standing contract.
The aim at VH1 Soul comes from poor ratings and a dream for Seacrest to advance his media empire. To date, he has hosted Fox’s American Idol, E! News, On Air With Ryan Seacrest and is producing the Keeping Up With the Kardashian franchise.
Seacrest insists that if he does buy into a network, he will not brand it in his name the way Oprah Winfrey did with her OWN channel.
