FOR THE HAIR
JUST BECAUSE SALON
Carol Thomas is revered by her clients, many of whom travel from New Jersey and Manhattan, as the queen of hair health. Her Brooklyn salon owner stocks five different reconstructive treatments, from a protein pack to a professional moisturizing solution, to address their various needs. Ask her regulars what conditioner she uses on them and most will respond curiously. “She whips something up in a bowl,” reported an editor who has been a client for nine years. For those struggling with dry, damaged, or fragile tresses, the road to recovery starts with her detox treatment to help correct damage to the scalp and hair caused by environmental issues. Salt (from the sea or sweating) and chlorine are killers when it comes to keeping locks moisturized. “Everything goes through the hair,” says Thomas, “even basic medications like birth control or high blood pressure pills.” The detox treatment strips out any buildup from medication or hair products.
First, Thomas applies the Davines Detoxifying Environment Damage Recovery Mud (think: clay mask) to unshampooed damp strands. After 30 minutes under a steamer or warm towel, hair is shampooed to remove all the buildup the mud has brought to the surface. Next, a detoxifying and moisturizing conditioner is applied, and after a minimum of 15 minutes it’s rinsed out. Afterward, the hair is blown or set and then styled. The $95 treatment gives hair more body and leaves it feeling noticeably lighter and softer. Thomas recommends the treatment once every two or three months. 141 Carlton Ave. Brooklyn. 718.722.7810. justbecausehairsalon.com —K.M.
