Whether you’re searching for a loft fit for parties or a house with a backyard made for a swing set, the housing market in the District has some amazing finds. We tapped the area’s best and brightest real estate players to see what’s hot right now in the DMV.
H STREET CORRIDOR, NORTHEAST
Already being called the new U Street, this extension of Capitol Hill is making a name for itself, with eclectic retail and renovated residential properties on every corner, says Gordon Young Jr., an agent with the Rhonda Mortensen Group. Smith Commons, which opened in December, has already become a huge draw for the neighborhood. Says owner Jerome Bailey, “H Street has a lot of history; it’s an up-and-coming neighborhood, and we wanted Smith Commons to help create the vibe.†The landscape was upgraded recently with the addition of Tru Orleans Restaurant & Gallery, a family-friendly Cajun joint with an art gallery upstairs. Domus Property Management’s Faraji Whalen also notes that the streetcar service coming to H Street can only up its cachet.
NATIONAL HARBOR, MD
“National Harbor is the hottest location in the DMV—it was built with convenience in mind,†says Vangie Williams, realtor with Signature Executive Realtors. Completed in 2009, this area is replete with new luxe housing, high-end hotels, and boutiques. Its walkable layout and upscale atmosphere make it the perfect home to spots such as Bond 45, House of Kas, and Pose Ultra Lounge at the Gaylord National Resort.
If you’re looking for a suburban feel, this could be your new nabe. It’s only three stops on the Red Line to Union Station, but as Whalen notes, it feels as if it were miles away. Single-family homes with huge lots abound at great prices. For those seeking more modern amenities, the four-story townhome development Chancellor’s Row has recently opened. New retail shops and restaurants are in the works.
