Esteemed actresses Regina King and Taraji P. Henson will co-host the third annual VH1 Soul and Black Girls Rock! Inc. awards show, a celebration of exemplary women of color. Former Editorial Director of Essence Magazine, Susan L. Taylor will be the keynote speaker. The event will he held on Sunday, November 2, 2008 at the Allen Room at JAZZ at Lincoln Center in New York City.
BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Inc. is a nonprofit, youth empowerment mentoring organization established for young women of color by DJ Beverly Bond. Bond will partner with VH1 Soul to honor such stars as supermodel Iman, entertainer Erykah Badu, actress Pam Grier, singer Estelle and many others for their outstanding achievements and distinguished career marks.
In addition to entertainers other African American women will also be celebrated for their accomplishments, such U.S. Para-Olympian and worldâ€™s fastest amputee April Holmes, who is the world record holder in the 100, 200 and 400 meter races. And Nicole Paultre-Bell, widow of Shawn Bell, and his mother, Valerie Bell, will be recognized for the strength they showed in the midst of adversity.
Bethann Hardison, who shook up the fashion world by speaking out against the lack of diversity in the industry will be awarded for her candidness. And actress and icon Pam Grier will be honored as this yearâ€™s BGR! Living Legend.
“It is important that we take time to honor these extraordinary individuals and hold them up as shining examples of the great women that we are, so that future generations of girls can see other examples of who they can become,” says DJ Beverly Bond about the event.
